When it comes to Indiana hardcore, In the Face of War is a band that must be mentioned. Now disbanded, ITFOW is set to release a live DVD, with screenings at American Dream Hi-Fi in Kokomo and State Street Pub in Indianapolis. Ahead of these events, our Seth Johnson caught up with vocalist Ben Sutton for a quick interview.

Seth Johnson: Why did you decide to put out this DVD?

Ben Sutton: We had the footage for almost seven years now and by the persuasion of Alex Lukens, who edited the DVD, and the persistence of John Saxen, who put out the DVD, the project finally came to fruition.  This was long overdue, and I thought it better late than never.

SJ: In particular, what made that show special to you?

BS: The show was really a celebration.  It was our 10-year anniversary, and we were able to play again with past members that we hadn’t even seen in ages.  It was an absolutely magical experience to play one more time with each other and go out on a positive note.  What made it really special is that so many of our friends were there. It was so great to share in one last show together!

SJ: In the Face of War had a big impact on a lot of people. Have you felt this even more as the years have passed since breaking up? It would seem the DVD release speaks to that.

BS: To be honest, it never really hit me until now that we were involved in something so special.  Now the impact is hitting me, and I couldn’t be more honored to have been a part of it.  Back then, we were just so busy with playing shows that I didn’t have time to think about it.

SJ: Tell me about the plans surrounding the DVD release.

BS: We are doing two screenings at the moment, with the possibility of doing more.  The screenings will feature the short film by Alex Lukens called High Fructose Suicide Booth.  The premiere is on Saturday, January 20 in Kokomo at American Dream Hi-Fi at and will feature the full uncut show with a running time of 1.5 hours.  There will be another showing on Wednesday, January 24 in Indianapolis at State Street Pub with a shortened 30-minute version of the show and will feature Jeremy Tubbs magical video talents.  Each showing is $2.

SJ: What are some of your favorite parts about the DVD?

BS: There are some amazing close ups by Brian Dove that really blow me away.  Also, some of the shots from the balcony of the pile ons.   I don’t know how I survived! And, of course, the very end, when we were all hugging.

SJ: Are there any other plans for ITFOW re-releases following this DVD?

BS: No, this will be it.  At least as far as plans go.
