On Friday night, the historic Melody Inn is celebrating their Sweet 16 with Dave Brown and Rob Ondrish at the helm. The pair took ownership of the Mel, which was founded in 1935, back in October 2001. In that time, their stage has seen a wide variety of acts, both locally and nationally known and was recently ranked in Alternative Press as one of the 15 Must-Visit rock 'n’ roll bars in the country.

For their 16th, Dave and Rob have put together an incredible night of music. The lineup includes America Owns the Moon, Ricky Rat Pack, The Smiths Tribute, Eliot Bigger and DJ Jewey Ramone. The party starts at 9 p.m., with an admission of just $8.

Brett Alderman: Is there anything different with this year’s event from past anniversary parties?

Dave Brown: This year is similar to our anniversary shows in year's past.  We always try to put together a show with some of our very favorite bands.

BA: What are some of your favorite moments of past anniversary shows?

DB: The previous anniversary show that stands out for me was our 10-year anniversary.  Instead of one night, we had a 4-day extravaganza on a Thursday through Sunday.  You talk about a Monday hangover!  That one was a doozy!

BA: What are some specific memories from your time running the Mel? Favorite bands? Crazy nights?

DB: We have literally seen it all in 16 years.  I wish we had the forethought to have had a videographer document the events at the Melody Inn over that span.  It would have made for an amazing documentary.  Some of the best memories for me are the amazing performances we've seen over the years.  Bands like Peelander-Z, Daikaiju and Human Aftertaste turn a rock show into a spectacle.

BA: How is the Melody Inn different now then 16 years ago?

DB: Other than expanding out back and creating the PBR Lounge and the Smokers Garden, the Mel is basically the same as it has been since 2001.  Just like the day we started, we provide a venue that gives musicians a place to play their own original material.  What sets us apart has been our dedication to not only providing a place for local bands to play, but also giving unknown touring bands a place to play while passing through on the road.  We've become internationally known because of that.  We've always had the policy that we don't care if a band from out of town has zero fans in Indy...If we like their music, we book them...then we just hope and pray that people show up.
