Another exciting night this Friday at Musical Family Tree, with the launch of the Melt Audio Sessions website. Brought to you by Derek Vorndran (In Store Recordings), Cortland Foxworth (Melt Audio Studios) and Kurt Lee Nettleton, this new venture aims to bring Indiana music directly to your preferred screen.

This Friday’s launch will feature three bands that will have sessions available to watch after the launch. Doors open at 8 p.m. to see Elwood, Volunteer Department and Andrew S Burden. It’s just $5 for three great bands with beer available from Fountain Square Brewing Co.

According to Tanner Standridge, Elwood’s involvement with Melt Audio Sessions began through knowing Vorndran. “I released a record under Derek's label In Store Recordings and Adam [Gross] had released an S.M. Wolf record with him as well,” Standridge says. “We have been buddies for a few years now.” On how the website will impact the local scene, Standridge added, “I think Melt Audio is going to be fantastic. It's really hard to come by good quality videos of any local bands. Lots of cell phone videos with poor quality audio. The session we did for Melt was a blast! It was all recorded live, but it felt like a pro studio setup and sounded amazing.”

Derek Vorndran gave me a little insight on the origins of Melt Audio Sessions before the site goes live on May 19.

Brett Alderman: Where did Melt Audio Sessions come from?

Derek Vorndran: There is a studio in Broad Ripple called Melt Audio Studios, which is run by Cortland Foxworth. I met Cortland when Caleb McCoach was recording his latest album, and he asked me to come over and check it out. I really liked his setup and asked him if he wanted to work together on some sessions and that’s how we started. I really liked his studio name, and just figured since we are doing it at Melt Audio Studios, [we] might as well call it Melt Audio Sessions.

BA: How many people are involved in the venture?

DV: Right now, [Melt Audio Sessions] is myself (camera guy, video editor), Cortland (audio producer), and Kurt Lee Nettleton (camera guy, video editor). But unfortunately and with great sadness, Kurt will be moving to Portland this summer. So we are losing a major part of the team.

BA: What has it taken to get the project to this point?

DV: Basically just doing it and figuring it out as we go. A year ago, we barely knew each other but somehow we just crossed paths and went with this idea.

BA: What type of content are you hoping to feature on the website?

DV: Right now, the goal is just producing the best audio and visual content we can with the space we are in. Just trying to feature and record the bands we really like right now. But mainly, the site will just be live studio videos that we will be producing.

BA: Is there a subscription to Melt Audio Sessions or will the content be free?

DV: Right now, we will be offering the songs we record with each band online to stream, watch on YouTube/ Vimeo, and [people can] also purchase the session if they would like the audio.

BA: How did you choose the first three acts that are involved?

DV: There really wasn’t any method to who we chose. It basically just came down to the first three bands that wanted to play and were free to play. And they were the first three to respond.

BA: What can we expect from the launch on May 19?

DV: No fireworks or special effects, but just a straightforward site. We hope people will come and check out the work we have been doing for the past year.

BA: How will you incorporate the live launch with the website?

DV: We won’t be, we will turn the site live at 12 a.m. on May 19, as long as there aren't any setbacks.

BA: Will there be a live stream of the event?

DV: No, but future plans to incorporate that technology. I need to learn how it works first.

BA: What future plans do you have for Melt Audio Sessions?

DV: We have already done about 12 sessions, and plan on doing at least two a month. And we plan to hopefully attract some regional and national touring acts to come play at the studio.

BA: Do you expect more live events like the launch going forward?

DV: I could see us getting involved with more events depending on where this goes, so definitely a future possibility. I’m actually starting to look more into live show recording and video work through my label In Store Recordings.  For now, the idea is to keep everything in the studio.

BA: Have you reached out to other artists?

DV: Pretty much every month since we started. And as I mentioned, we have done about 12 sessions.

BA: Are you planning on utilizing other creative mediums beside music?

DV: I don’t think we have thought that far ahead. But I think it is something to think about later in this process of growing the site.
