Holy crap, 100 of these playlists. And more than that, I'm just about one week short of two whole years on this ole playlist project--peep on the very first one for confirmation. I mean, I've known this is coming up the whole time because of my intimate knowledge of numbers, but it still feels weird and like I want to brag about it in the staff meeting I have to go to later (I won't, though).
Stick with me and maybe we'll make it to 200. Indiana music's not going anywhere, that's for certain, so I'll have no trouble finding another 1,000 songs to include. My clicking finger my crumble first, though. We'll see what the doctor says when I finally schedule that appointment.
Until then, enjoy this week's playlist. The first four tracks are brand new additions to the archive. The remaining six are some of my absolute favorite songs in the archive, ones I return to all the time. I'm reading this Mary Karr book call The Art of Memoir right now, and she keeps going on and on about how connecting with your reader hinges on constructing these carnal images of memory. It's the "show not tell" dictum all over again, sure, but she says it well, and it's got me thinking of when all these songs sank into me.
"Sunburnt and Blown" from Memory Map calls to mind the cramped downstairs studio of WIUX at Indiana University when, as a senior-year DJ, I would field constant calls during my show with requests for tracks from the band's then-new LP. It was hot in that little room and the bass frequencies rattled the door handle and I could see through the floor into the basement where a few dozen discarded computer monitors were sloughed into piles.
"Forever We Shine" I took on a walk with me one lunch break at work. It was a too-hot summer day for such a walk and I came back to my desk buoyant and pit-stained.
I could go on but I won't. Know that these songs are lovely, though.
Thanks, as ever, to Smallbox for their weekly support of these playlists.
Help us spread Indiana music, and we'll give you special rewards as our way of saying "thanks!"
