Hi there, Taylor here with an admission: I'm much too polite to mimic in writing the way this playlist kicks off. I mean, I began this post with "Hi," for crying out loud. But whatever, that Crack Lung track is new and it's a blast of hot fire that will run down your neck so fast you won't even know what hit you. The Shimmercore track that follows it up is a perfect transition into the more melodic rest of the playlist, since it kicks off with a little pump of noise before getting sweeter and sweeter.
As ever, I'm excited about new Magnificent Reflections tracks on the archive. Wondering why I say, "as ever?" Well then, just check out my review from a while back where I went off the deep end. It's the only track from a brand new release called Cicada Killer, and it's heavy, wide, and odd, a little bit of off-kilter kraut, just like you'd expect. It starts and stops to keep you on the very edge. Fingers crossed there's way more where this came from.
And, if you were worried that there wasn't enough of the sweet, slick melody in store, right up after that one comes "What You Want" by The Pieces, a song so smooth, catchy, and kind that I can't really imagine there'd be a time where I wouldn't want it to be playing. I'd like to live underneath that bass line, too, because it feels like a tightly-wrapped warm blanket on a gross day.
The playlist concludes with a brand new track from a group called Carol Kelley. There's something about the way the song sneaks in on that low grinding synth, and about the way vocals are buried under distortion and must, that feels just so cryptically melancholy. It climbs up and up as the drums and guitar come in, but still it feels ramshackle and subdued; a great way to slink off the end of this week's selections.
Thanks, as ever, to Smallbox who help make this playlist possible every week!
