It's a good thing we met in this blog right now, because there two things happening mere hours from now (now being Monday, August 17, around 2pm) that you're going to want to know about it. First off, continuing with the Mellow Mondays series on Monument Circle, Rob Funkhouser plans to bring the chill from 6pm to 7pm today. That guy is a consummate professional, so you'd do well to be there.
Once Funkhouser wraps it up and packs it up, we all, us three, will ride east toward Irvington for Ghost Vibes 666. "Hey wait, is that a sort of renewal of the Weird Vibes series we all loved earlier this year? The one curated by John Flannelly at our beloved and lost Vibes Music?" It is exactly that, astute reader. Catch sets from Dante Augustus Scarlatti, Flannelly himself, Miami Mice, Mememoremee, and Ariadne, kicking off at 8pm at the Irving.
If you're in for a Bloomington blastoff, then Thursday night's got the coverage: Cool Ranch, Potty Mouth, and Mr. Hipster will take to the Root Cellar and attempt to rattle the rafters such that the garlic concoction on the delightful fries at FARM above will shuffle down like so many snowflakes. It will be savory and beautiful.
Saturday's a split, but a good one. Either we'll post up at Monon Day with it's weird and wide assortment of musical charmers (stretching across three house venues in Bloomington), or we'll get stuck in the deep at the seventh annual Jay Brookinz Beat Battle at the Vogue (SEVENTH!). There are no wrong choices, only difficult ones.
Let the playlist guide you: Canid, Unions, Norman Oak, and Gus Moon will be in attendance at Monon Day, and BangersbyOne and Mandog will be at the Beat Battle. Brookinz himself will not battle, but his curatorial hands are all over the thing (obviously), so it felt fitting to include a standout track from his monumental Gateway series.
Thanks as ever to Smallbox for helping to make this weekly playlist possible!
Help us spread Indiana music, and we'll give you special rewards as our way of saying "thanks!"
