On first spin, Kam Kama's newest record Shift immerses the listener in a murky sea of chorus and plate reverb. The guitars and bass mesh into a single current as the drums push ahead, and Scott’s self conscious vocals, spoken at times, hit with fragmented images. You get it right away, and it’s good. But after spinning the record a few more times I am amazed by how tight the playing is. The tempo and dynamics pull back and push forward with the emotion of the music. The arrangements are focused, intricate; they could even be heady if they weren’t charged with that dynamic emotional energy. These boys are in it, making love to their creation, live and on tape.
What we have here is a hard working band at the top of their game. If you're already a fan of Kam Kama, if you like dark post punk with an eighties flavor, or if you collect great Indiana releases on vinyl then go ahead and buy this record.
