I'm taking a slightly different tack this week with the whole "show preview" angle. Instead of dropping one artist from a bunch of shows into the playlist, I'm going deep on one single event: The Virginia Avenue Folk Fest. If you're like me you've been hearing whispers about the thing for months and you've been waiting. It's finally here.
Across nine stages along Virgina Avenue down in Fountain Square over 70 acts will all cram themselves into the limited hours of a single Saturday and sketch out the true litany of directions music under the heading of "folk" can take. From the traditional to the modern, the super stoked on life to the hopelessly bummed out, this festival will make wandering around Virginia Avenue all day delightful for even the pickiest of folk fans.
The bulk of the event is on the pay what you want model, with all proceeds going Trusted Mentors, a local organization that "uses the power of mentoring to help adults establish stable lives by reducing the chaos brought about poverty, homelessness, under-employment, and the effects of incarceration." Learn more about them on their website. For a small ticket fee, you can pick up a VIP package which includes access to complimentary food and beverages in the IMOCA gallery in addition to entrance into an after party later in the evening. Grab those tickets here. You can also sign up to volunteer at the event here.
Get yourself in the right head space for the event with my hardly-even-scratching-the-surface playlist above. A lot of it's outside the lane of what I've been repping on here lately (fewer blasts of noise, more tight vocal harmonies). As such it's a great way of pointing a finger at the fact that there's excellent music of every sort getting made around Indiana constantly and that we could all probably stand to take a closer look at things we might otherwise miss by sheer dint of habit.
What I'm saying is stare hard and boost! Quote me on this. Please.
Help us spread Indiana music, and we'll give you special rewards as our way of saying "thanks!"
