About:

(muncie IN 1984-87) Greg Moran, guitars - Kevin Royal, sax & keyboards - Michael Newell, drums -John McCool, bass (84-85) - Robert Brian Smith, bass (86-87) What started as a "covers" band with John McCool on bass mutated into the prototypical "indie rock" band which borrowed heavily from early R.E.M., Psychedelic Furs, The Jam and other rock bands from that "IRS's The Cutting Edge" era of the '80s. Lots of live gigs.

Does anyone know where Kevin Royal is? It's great to hear about his band and would love to get in touch with him. Last I heard he was in Lafayette working for Catepillar. Anyone know anyone who might be able to reach him? I'll keep reading the comments in the meantime...
Thanks.

Jesus: I love Barry Kern's (Sept. 07 - 2009) comment! Just yesterday I was looking at Greg Moran in photos on Musical Family Tree... Greg was the talent... I wish I had the masters like Barry hints at... I ended up with a rough mix cassette just like Greg, Robert and Kev did... I had to go to Minnesota due ot a death in the family and by the time I got things settled Greg had had gone onto playing guitar in the Mystic Groovies and Robert had joined Girls Can Touch at Purdue... I never won a contest in Wisconsin (though I drank a LOT of beer in Eau Claire, WI) and the stuff we recorded in Ohio pales to what Jeff Weiss recorded in the No Bar so... dunno... the fates had other things in store for us... I love the stuff we did in Ohio... that "Art of Recording Workshop" was a wonderful place and whomever set up the drums did a rock'n great job. God bless John McCool and Kevin Royal...
Love this band! Wish I had that great of a memory to recall whether or not we (The Beertonez) ever performed with them. But if we did not, I do know it's one band we did want to perform with.

What a great band.

I went to the studio with these guys, (The Recording Workshop, Chillacothe(?) OH.) as the drum tech/asst. engineer. The tracks they cut were freakin' awesome. (Greg Moran was beyond a pro, you'd think he'd been working in studios for years.)
Within a week of the session the drummer (Newell) freaked out, stole the master tapes, and moved back to Wisconsin, where he later won a songwriter contest (with Greg Moran's songs!) If not for the freakout, I think they would've been big. (my theory was always that Newell saw the massive potential from the recordings and decided he wasn't up for what they could possibly bring.)
