About:

Led by the husband-and-wife team of singer/guitarist Jake Smith and drummer Freda Love (both formerly of Antenna), the Bloomington, Indiana-based alternative pop band the Mysteries of Life also comprised keyboardist Dale Lawrence, celloist Geraldine Haas, bassist Kenny Childers and drummer LonPaul Ellrich. After debuting with the single "Kira," the group signed to RCA to issue their 1996 LP Keep a Secret; following a pair of indie label EPs, Focus on the Background and Anonymous Tip, the Mysteries of Life resurfaced with the full-length Come Clean in 1998. They later released the superb "Distant Relative" on in-house record label No Nostalgia in 2001. Released "Beginning To Move" in 2006 on Affirmitive/MFT. Currently Jake and Freda live in Nottingham England and continue to play and record. A new album of recordings is expected in 2008.

  • Is there any new music from TMoL in the pipeline?
by Don L. (Milwaukee) on Dec 10, 2012
  • Can someone help me find some tabs/chords for TMoL songs? I don't know where to begin ... well, with 'Tell Me' I could start there. Thanks!

  • The Mysteries are still one of my favorite bands - I keep hoping Jake and Freda and Dale and company will find a way to reunite and crank out more of their amazing tunes.

  • Their cover of Naive Melody is amazing - my wife and I played it at our wedding. Didn't know the band was a husband/wife collaboration. Fitting...

  • TMOL has been one of my favorite bands for many many years.... I sincerely hope there's a new album soon, and some live shows too!

  • I am delighted to learn about this site! I must have played "Come Clean" a thousand times and it still sounds great. (Love the demos posted here!) Jake's guitar sound is perfectly sculpted, Frida's drumming powerfully bassy, they feature a CELLIST (how cool is that?), and the songs are both allusive and elusive, so they retain their interest over time. Not to mention, they are an incredibly nice bunch of people. I used to see them play back in Bloomington in the early 2000s, and they were always modest, friendly and fun. It's a crime RCA dropped them. May the Mysteries of Life continue forever!

  • I love the Mysteries of Life! I saw them twice in Austin. I read somewhere that a new album was brewing. Could someone in the know please provide an update? Thanx!

  • wow. this is such a great band! i discovered them today listening to pandora radio. i tried itunes and then i was determined to find "when i let my guard down" and thanks to this website . . . i found a lot more than this!
    awesome!

  • The Mysteries of Life is brilliant band that never made it. The song, "feel my way," has no verses. They just sing the chorus over and over again for 2 minutes, 37 seconds, and it completely works. I challenge ANYONE to do that and make it work.
