About:

Jeb Banner, Josh Seib and Finn Swingley recorded music together in many different combinations including several bands from 1992-2001. The recordings on this page were done by some configuration of the three with many guest appearances from people like Jorma Whittaker, June Panic and Daniel Touw among others. It was recorded on 1/4" 4 track (Tascam/Teac) and 1" 8 track (Scully 280) around 1999-2001 at Tim and Billy's Salvage in downtown Indy and in Josh's basement at LeAnn Maxwell's house in Indy. Josh mixed the songs after he moved to Chicago. Many songs are fragments and unfinished. No names, sorry, there weren't many then so there aren't now.

Wow! I can't wait to listen to all of this. I remember driving from Loogoote to IU to hear you guys....probably 92/93? Good times! Josh's mom was my french teacher, haha! My friends all had terrible crushes on various guys in the band, and who could blame them? I'm still a sucker for a cute, talented, creative guy...so what if I've been married for 13 years!

Since these recordings continue to get a fair number of downloads, I thought I'd share what I can remember about the tracks. If you'd like to preserve the mystery of 79 unnamed songs stop reading.

Volume 1

1 "untitled" - Jeb - bass, guitar, Josh - drums, keys . Probably recorded as a trial for the new tape machine (4 track TEAK).
2 "Old Rare Floyd" - Finn - guitars, Josh drums, trumpet Jorma - bass, tape effects Jeb - rhodes piano. Recorded as part of an EP in a weekend project in Leanne's basement.
3 "Crystal Lines" - Finn- guitars, Josh - drums, trumpet, Jorma - bass, vocals. Jeb - rhodes piano. More EP in a weekend stuff, virtually made up while tape was rolling. Later re-worked by Jorma, Lon Paul and Finn for Jorma's first solo album.
4 "Torn Cup Fly Up Above" - Finn - guitars, Jorma - vocals, Josh - drums, bass, keys. Same session, but the original rhythm track was replaced by Josh for being unsalvagable. This is a different mix but is actually the same version that was used for Marmoset's Record in Red.
5 "Elsewhere Between" - Finn - guitars, vocals, Jeb - bass, Jorma - rhodes piano, Josh - drums. Same session as above.
6 "The Eye (Surgical Terms)" - Finn - guitar, Jorma - bass, tape effects Josh - drums, radio Jeb - rhodes piano. My favorite from the same session.
7 "untitled" - Finn - guitar, keyboard, Jeb - bass, Josh - drums. Another quickie from the same session.
8 "I Would" - Finn - rhodes piano, vocals Josh - drums, bass, trumpet Jorma - keyboards. Same session.
9 "Floating Heads" (instr) - Josh - guitars, Finn - drums, slide guitar, Jorma - keyboards. Same session.
10 "Floating Heads" (vocal fragment) - same as above with Josh on vocals.
11 "Golden Cloak" - Jorma - vocals, Josh - drums, bass, guitar, organ, Jeb - rhodes piano, Finn - electric guitar. Recorded by Josh and Jorma, with Josh, Jeb and Finn adding organ, rhodes and guitar at half speed on an overdub. Different mix of the song released on Marmoset's Record In Red.
12 "untitled" - unfinished song by Jorma - bass, Josh - drums, Finn - guitar. Recorded at Leanne's.
13 "untitled" - another fragment from Leanne's basement. Finn - guitar, Josh - drums, bass, Jeb - slide guitar.
14 "untitled" - sounds like Josh playing all the instruments here.
15 "Instrumental" - Another EP in a weekend project featuring The Eyelashes (Josh, Jorma and Finn). Recorded at Tim & Billy's in one night with some overdubs the next day. Written during an earlier jam with Jeb Banner, this one was later re-done by Marmoset for the Mishewaka EP.
16 "Batti O Bel Masetto" - A Joe Shackleford song performed by The Eyelashes (and a favorite of mine).
17 "Donut" - The Eyelashes. Jorma - vocals, bass, Josh - drums, guitars, trumpet, Finn - guitars, keyboard.
18 "Along The Highway" - The Eyelashes again, this time doing a song written by Finn's friend Matt Chapman. This was the experimental version...
19 "untitled" - Final song from the Eyelashes session. This was a quirky reggae jam that we made up. It almost works. Almost.
20 "Parting Glances" - Recorded as part of a project for the Finn Swingley Band (for lack of a better name), featuring Finn - vocal, guitar, Andy Fry - guitar, Jorma - bass and Josh - drums. Recorded at Tim & Billy's.
21 "Fire Engine" - More from the same sessions. Unfortunately never got around to vocals on most of these.
22 "Opulence" - Same session.
23 "Exceptional" - Same session.
24 "untitled" - Sounds like a Jeb (guitar) and Josh (drums) experiment to me. Probably from Tim & Billy's.

Volume 2

1 "untitled" - Finn - guitar, Josh - drums, unsure (June Panic?) - bass. I know June was present at some sessions, but I actually am not sure if this is just me and Josh or not. I am fairly sure I pretty much had it written when I came in and we just tracked it.
2 "untitled" - Finn - guitar, rhodes, Josh - bass, Daniel Touw(?) - drums. A song written in a jam with Josh and Finn and Daniel.
3 "Nowhereseville" - Jeb - guitar, vocals, bass(?). Josh - drums. Finn - backing vocal, guitar solo. This was a Jeb song that received a number of different mixes and is probably on the site in various incarnations. I personally like this mix pretty well.
4 "Cheap Sparks" - Finn - guitar, vocals. Josh - drums, metal objects, Jeb - bass, guitar solos. A song I wrote that never really quite gelled. I think there may be a better mix somewhere, but if the basic performance isn't that great, no amount of great mixing can fix it. All the above were recorded at Tim & Billy's.
5 "untitled" - Song from an unrealized film soundtrack I was working on. It was basically one long continuous jam. My sister Meghan is playing bass clarinet and cello on this, which were recorded at half speed, so they sound more like a sax and violin. Josh and I play the organ and rhodes. Recorded at Leanne's.
6 "Bada Lamente (mix 1)" - More unrealized film soundtrack stuff. Basically Twin Peaks inspired type stuff. This is Finn - guitar, bass, Josh on drums, organ.
7 "Bada Lamente (mix 2)" - A remix of the same track, I think to fix where the organ comes in.
8 "untitled" - Very collaborative song. Jeb - lead guitars, Finn - acoustic and bass guitar, organ, Josh - drums. Recorded at Leanne's. Remains a favorite of mine.
9 "untitled" - more unrealized film stuff (probably the same as track 5, but at half speed).
10 "Oh No!" or "It's Mine"- Josh Seib penned and probably played, though I believe this is one that Lon Paul played drums on. Nice chorus I think.
11 "Egg Roll" - Josh Seib - rythm guitar, bass, Finn - lead guitar, June Panic - drums. Josh re-recorded this several times before releasing a new version (featuring Ted Cho on lead guitar) on Satellite 66's Grasshopper EP.
12 "In Cue" or "Infinite Two Step" - Finn - rhodes piano, acoustic guitar Josh - drums, organ(?). Mostly written by Jeb but played by Finn and Josh. This is the instrumental version. The vocal version can be found on Jeb Banner's MFT page. I like it instrumental better, really.
13 "unknown title" - definitely a Jeb song. I don't think I was there, but it's reasonable to suppose that Josh played something as well.
14 "untitled" - Finn - guitar, Josh - bass, armadillo guitar, indian stringed instrument, trumpet, organ Daniel Touw - drums. At least I think that's how it worked.
15 "untitled" - Daniel - drums, Finn - rhodes, guitar, Josh - bass. A Daniel Touw composition.
16 "Over Mountaineers" - Josh Seib composition who no doubt played everything. Reworked several times and released on the Satellite 66 Grasshopper EP.
17 "untitled" - Finn - guitar, Josh - drums, Jeb - bass. (probably). I don't have a very clear recollection of where this one came from. It may have been one of a couple of June Panic's songs that we worked on a bit, at least the off the wall chord progression seems that way. Or it may have just been something that we came up with. I don't remember it, but I'm pretty sure that's me playing guitar...
18 "untitled" - Finn - guitar, Josh - drums. Just a quickie weird song Josh and I made up and recorded.
19 "untitled" - Jeb - bass, Josh - drums. Probably made up and recorded as a level check.
20 "untitled" - Jeb - guitar, bass(?), Josh - drums. Jeb song I believe. I wasn't present for this one. Weird drum sound. Jorma W later wrote some words for this and recorded a version entitled "Fall In Love" with Finn and Lon Paul for his solo album. I remember having trouble pulling off the aggression of Jeb's guitar part. It probably would have worked better if he'd played it, it's more his style.
21 "untitled" - June Panic - acoustic guitar, Finn - electric guitar, Josh Seib - drums. A very difficult June Panic song that we worked on for what seemed like all afternoon. I can't remember if Josh or Daniel played drums on this, and I recall Jeb being there, but I don't hear any bass. I believe the end went on for some time, but was probably flubbed hence the fade.
22 "Don't Know How" - Jeb - bass, guitar. Josh - drums, backing vocal, Lon Paul - lead vocals. Finn - backing vocal, keyboard, Jorma - backing vocal. Great Jeb song that Lon Paul added a great vocal to. I don't think it's really ever been mixed properly. Recorded at Leanne's.
23 "You Say You" - Josh Seib song who played everything on this. One of my favorites of his.
24 "untitled" - a No Name Band song. Finn - guitar, Jason Yoder - guitar, Jeb - bass, Josh - drums. I remember I came up with the chorus riff, which is in 7/8.
25 "untitled" - another No Name Band song. Same line up. I think this was actually the last song we wrote and recorded together.
26 "untitled" - another No Name Band song. I think there may be a couple of versions of this song.
27 "untitled" (provisionally titled "Pop Machine" before we gave up bothering to give the songs titles) - A No Name Band song. This one is mainly based on a really cool riff that Jason Yoder brought in and we expanded on.
28 "untitled" - another No Name Band song. I think this was basically just a riff that we were working and laid down to come back to at a later date, which is why it sounds pretty rough. Then again, most of 'em did.
29 "Its A Joke" - sort of a weepy song that Jeb and I were working on. Obviously it was so maudlin that we ended up just cracking up and moving on.

Volume 3

This disc was titled by Josh "The Grainy Miscellany" and that is precisely what it is. Many of these are just random tidbits, incomplete songs and ideas, If that. There are a handful of good Josh Seib songs in this bunch though.

1. "Untitled" - Another test song. Probably Jeb - bass, acoustic guitar, Josh - drums, electric guitar, keyboards. I think this is Jeb and Josh writing a song as a test of the new Scully 8 track machine. I was not present. It's a pretty cool song though.
2. "untitled" - Jeb - bass, Finn - guitar, Josh - drums. Huge echo was a definite sonic footprint of the Tim & Billy's space, where I'm sure this was recorded. Very typical collaborative song of the time.
3. "untitled" - Josh - keys, drums. Jeb(?) - bass. Either Josh on his own or with Jeb. Surely Tim & Billy's on the Scully. Sounds like it might be out of synch, a constant problem with recording with that machine if we weren't paying attention.
4. "untitled" - Sounds like a Josh Seib solo work. I don't remember this one.
5. "untitled" - weird out of synch mix of track 1 from Volume 2. Not sure what Josh was getting at here. Probably thought it was interesting.
6. "untitled" - Josh - bass, guitar, drums, Finn - guitar. Josh and I used to experiment with recording the weirdest things we could come up with. This is one of those experiments where we consciously tried to write parts that either didn't make sense or were dissonant. I like this one.
7. "untitled" - Sounds like another Josh Seib solo work to me, though Jeb may have been there.
8. "untitled" - Probably Josh - drums, Jeb - bass, Finn - guitar. Honestly, I don't know. This could be Josh solo as well, as it kind of has his stamp. However, it sounds very live which makes me think it's the group.
9. "untitled" - Jeb - bass, Finn - guitar, Josh - drums. Another typical collaborative song for that time.
10. "It's A Joke" - band version of track 29 on volume 2. Josh - drums, Jeb - vocal, bass(?), guitar Finn - guitar (and possibly an electric 12 string overdub as well). Kind of never really worked, this one.
11. "untitled" - Jeb - guitar, Finn - bass(?), Josh - drums. That's definitely a Jeb guitar part. Once in a while we'd switch instruments, so it's possible I play bass on this.
12. "Snow Outside Your Window" - Complete Josh Seib solo work. This was recorded at Leanne's on the TEAC I believe, using the built in rhythm tracks and foot pedals on the Lowry organ (one of two organs we moved into her basement and for all I know is still there). I really like this one and it really belongs on Josh's page.
13. "The Empty Chair" Mostly a Finn composition that nearly ruined some friendships. Josh - drums, organ Jeb - bass, Finn - guitars, vocals. Another version had a cool lead guitar/trumpet medley that Finn and Josh put down. Leanne wrote some words and sang a version, but Josh apparently didn't like it and erased it and put down his own vocal that didn't work either. So what we have left is a half finished song that no one had the will to work on any longer.
14. "untitled" - Sounds like a Josh Seib solo composition / performance to me though Jeb may have been present. I don't recall being there anyway.
15. "untitled" - Josh solo work.
16. "untitled" - Josh reworking a No Names song to which he contributed the main riff. I think this is him by himself, but Jeb may be playing bass. Sounds like a drum machine instead of real drums. Again, don't think I was there.
17. "untitled" - Jeb - guitars + drum machine. One of the first things recorded on the TEAC 4 track. Nice little instrumental piece methinks.
18. "untitled" - Probably Josh on his own here. A bit of an experiment probably.
19. "unknown title" - Josh Seib solo work, another one that Lon Paul probably played drums on. More 'finished' than a lot of stuff here.
20. "untitled" - Curious little Josh Seib organ piece. Recorded at Leanne's on the Lowry organ.
21. "Snow Outside My Window" - A different version of Track 12, I think recorded later. Josh on all instruments here. I think the organ version works a little better.
22. "Over Your Shoulder" - Another Josh Seib solo work and another one of my favorites. Deserves a bit more notice probably.
23. "untitled" - No doubt just a jam that we recorded. Very low fi. I'm not sure who is doing what here really.
24. "untitled" - Another jam, sounds like it's from the same night.
25. "untitled" - More jamming. This sounds like Jeb on guitar with Josh drumming.
26. "untitled" - Unknown. Sounds like something Josh would have written, but it really could have been any of us.

Volume 4

So why did we never make an album? In fact, why did we not even finish half of the stuff we started? I guess we were just not focused at the time. There was a lot going on in our lives, Jeb and Jenny getting married and having a baby, Finn and Josh moving to Chicago, etc. We were in a very transitional period. We never even settled on a band name, much less a song title. In the end I think we enjoyed the exhilerating process of creation to the much more tedious process of completing something. So I guess what we did was just continue to create, in the hope that something worthwhile would come of it. I think if you boiled down these 89 tracks to one 12 song album, you'd probably have something worthwhile, but it's too revisionist for me to attempt. So what we have here are ten more morsels, which I recently dug up from old CDs and cassettes (some of my CDs are sadly beyond repair - stupid cheap memorex CD-Rs!).

1. "On Air" - Finn - guitar, e-bow, Josh - drums, keys, Jeb - bass. Not sure why this one languished in the vaults for so long, as it was one of my favorites.
2. "untitled" - Josh - drums, keys, Jeb - bass, Finn - guitar(?). A little Tim and Billy's weirdness.
3. "untitled" Finn - guitars, Jeb/Josh - bass, drums. This was one I'd basically written, but we had trouble with the timing, so Jeb and/or Josh re did the drums, but it never really worked. If you don't listen to closely it's pretty good sounding though.
4. "untitled" - Jeb - guitars/bass, Josh - drums, keys. Version of "Fall In Love" (volume 2 / track 20) with keyboard part.
5. "untitled" - Josh - guitar, Jorma - bass, Finn - drums (probably). I believe this is a Jorma song that Josh and I recorded with him. Either that or it's Josh playing in Jorma's style. I think the drums sound like me (i.e. sloppy).
6. "untitled" - Josh - bass, Jenny B. - drums, Finn - rhodes piano, Ryan Spaulding - saxophone. Jenny was learning to play drums and our friend Ryan wanted to try out his sax, so Josh and I jammed out some simple stuff. Nothing spectacular, but I think we had a good time, which is at least part of why we do it.
7. "Bringing It Back" - Jeb and Josh recorded this, either when I went to India in May 2000 or when I moved to Chicago in May 2001. In any case, I wasn't there. It's pretty good.
8. "The Empty Chair" - Another mix of this song (volume 3 / track 13), mainly because I like the guitar and trumpet line that comes in in the second half and this mix shows off the harmonies that Josh, Jorma and I worked on. This song really should have been scrapped and restarted. I think the drum part for one thing never really captured the feel of the song. It might have helped in the end if we'd just had a proper drummer, no offense to Josh. He's got other qualities.
9. "Just The Thought Of You" - A reworking of a song I'd originally written for the original line up of Satellite 66 back in 1996, I'd always liked it. This was the last thing the three of us recorded together at Tim and Billy's before I moved to Chicago in 2001. Josh would follow not long after and Tim and Billy's would be gutted for condos or whatever it is now. This version has drums, which Jeb ultimately decided to mix out (you can find other versions of this on Finn's page and on the Satellite 66 page).
10. "Scared" - A Jeb song. I don't know if the rest of us played on this or not, or even where specifically it was recorded, though I believe it was recorded on the Scully. I always thought it was weird, but I like it now.
